Recommends sentences, represents government during appeal process, if any. Maintaining standards of conduct among staff in office. Developing programs, legislation for law and cj reform. Public spokesperson for government on law issues in general. Reasons for dismissal of cases or not to charge. Due process problems/violations (of an individuals constitutional rights) Defendant is deserving to not be charged. May stop the charging process at any time. May request the court to dismiss charges. Defense counsel: legal counsel for the defendant in a criminal case who represents the defendant from arrest to final appeal. Types of defense counsel: privately retained counsel (defendant hires private attorney on their own), *assigned counsel: jurisdiction assigns indigent criminal cases to private attorney on a systematic or ad hoc basis.
