International system of measurement used to quantify and compare scienti c processes. Earth"s surface: 4 principal components overlap and intersect. Closed systems: self contained, isolated from outside in uence. Rare to nd in nature. ex: matter- (moisture, rainfall) Open systems: energy and matter free to be exchanged across systems.
