Marx- history as a story of progress but with really profound areas of conflict and strife. Darwin- history is an unfolding and adaptation of human beings to their environment. The axial age was a time period which lasted approximately 1,000 years, from 800 bce to 200 ce. It is marked by the appearance and spread of knowledge systems (ie. high philosophy or universal religion) which offered their adherents paths to a higher universal truth. Socrates/plato (387 bce); zarathustra (530 bce); siddhartha gautama (500 bce); Man as we know him today, came into being. Axial age- 800 bce - 200 ce. 5 kya- older understandings, clusters of isolated city-states. 3 kya- decentralization; each area/city-state has their own idea of who their patron-deity is cognitive dissonance. New set of ideas are emerging and old traditions are going away. Trying to come together as a whole empire. Axial age thought systems are defined by rules of thinking (3 examples)
