Research article vs Literature review
Research:
o Quantitative vs Qualitative
Qualitative is used more in Criminal Justice over quantitative
o Longitudinal vs Cross-Sectional
Collecting data only at specific time is cross-sectional
Literature Review:
o Literature Review
The more and more researchers that go into a field of study create new
stands and viewpoints on different topics. Literature review basically takes
these and looks at them critically, then summarizes the different
viewpoints.
o Systematic literature review
1-step further than just literature review. Finding specific details,
analyzing. Etc.
o Meta-analysis
What’s in an Article
Most articles contain the following sections:
o Abstract
o Introduction
o Literature Review
Author discusses about the general issue, or the topic, of the article.
o Data
o Research Method
o Results
o Conclusion and Discussion
Literature Review
Provide a general background of
o The general issue
o Why the topic is important
o Usually with both sides of story
o Usually……
Data
Data source, collecting first hand or second hand data.
o Using second-hand data, you do not know what the authors were focused on or if
the data is 100% the exact same as the original.
