The market revolution in the early nineteenth century transformed both the north and the south. These transformations took place in seven areas: labor, urbanization, industrialization, diversification, essential services, immigration, and ideology. First, labor was transformed in both thanks to several inventions. Eli whitney and his cotton gin, slavery became even further entrenched. In the north, they began to utilize mills and the sharing of labor. No longer was there a need for a highly skilled artesian, when that job could be broken into several minor tasks performed by not-so-trained laborers for less money. This system used domestic labor often referred to as mill girls, who came to the new textile centers from rural towns to earn more money than they could at home. Second, urbanization was really only a part of the north"s transformation. For the most part the south remained largely rural, with the exception of maybe a few port cities.
