VPAT 3100H Study Guide - Final Guide: Synovial Membrane, Synovitis, Tenosynovitis
Muscular System Word List
Muscle
Root for muscle- myo
Myology- study of muscles
Myopathy- disease of muscles
Myositis- inflammation of muscles
Muscle System consists of: muscles, tendons, ligaments
• Purpose of Muscles- contractions
• Purpose of Tendons- connects muscles to bones
• Purpose of Ligament – connects bones to bones or cartilage to cartilage
Origin & Insertion of the muscle
• Origin- muscle where it attaches and doesn’t move?? More proximal
• Insertion- muscle where it attaches and that bone moves; usually more distal
because we are talking about limbs or heads.
Tendon Sheath
Synovial- type of joint that is surrounded by a thick flexible membrane into which is
secreted a viscous fluid that lubricates the joint
Synovitis- inflammation of synovium
Tenosynovitis- inflammation of the tendon and synovium
Muscle Classification
• Skeletal muscle is voluntary & striated
• Smooth muscle is involuntary & non-striated
o Lines a lot of visceral, urinary bladder, GI tract, Repro tract, Respiratory tract,
etc.
• Cardiac muscle is involuntary & striated.
Actions of Muscles
Extension- making angle of joints larger
Flexion- making angle of joints smaller
Abduction- moving away from body; abduct someone- you take someone away
Adduction- moving towards body
Pronation- rotating palm towards floor; prone to this. won’t talk about a lot
o In ankles & wrists
o Species that can do this- raccoon, cats, ferrets
Supination- rotating dorsal
o In ankles & wrists
Masticatory Muscles
Masseter- aka cheek muscle; main muscle for chewing- brings mandible up

Masseter- aka cheek muscle; main muscle for chewing- brings mandible up. Internal intercostal muscles- help contract entire rib cage down. Transversus abdominis- muscle that runs across abdomen or transversely. Rectus abdominis- runs straight across abdomen; rectus means straight.
