Allport: personological: a term that emphasizes the development of a person, a unified and conscious whole. When we casually describe someone we usually use trait terms: lexical hypothesis: all important individual differences have become encoded within the natu- ral language over time. Allport & odbert (1936) found approximately 18,000 traits. Weaknesses of the lexical approach: these traits are lay-expressions of traits and may not accurately reflect what we know about psychology.
