The route of administration influences the rate at which the drug reaches its sites of action in the body: oral: this is the preferred route of administration for many drugs. After the drug is swallowed it dissolves in the fluids of the stomach and it is carried to the intestine, where they are absorbed into the bloodstream. The big disadvantage is its unpredictability: injection: this type of injection is common in medical practices. These injections usually take place subconsciously, into the large muscles, or in intravenously, directly into veins at points where they run just beneath the skin. Drug addicts prefer to use the intravenous route because the bloodstream delivers the drug directly to the brain.
