Commentary, march 13th: summary of some key points in the selfish gene. The selfish gene theory regards the visible organism (cats, humans, flowers) as the host. It is like a big machine whose purpose is to replicate the genes it carries in its cells. The author relates that plants and animals are properly described as groups of cooperative genes housed in ways that have effectively helped them survive over time. By constantly referring to this idea of the gene machine , Dawkins is constantly reminding his readers that even a human body is composed of many different building blocks which are together for a reason. The term is essentially being used to make the point that they are merely vehicles for passing down genes. Dawkins disputes the idea of the "good of the group", with respect to natural selection. Dawkins takes a "good of the gene" view on evolution.
