The dark gray sky weighed low over the barbed wire fence. The air was cold and thick to the point where you could almost feel it cutting through your skin, and every few seconds; a sharp wind shook the bare, snow covered branches, sending shivers up and down my spine. I looked around solemnly; at the old dirt road that so many people trudged through, the musty brick buildings, too many watchtowers to count and the barbed wire that seemed to stretch endlessly over the rolling hills. Something about this place was unreal to me. I read every book i could get my hands on and i watched every movie and documentary created in english or not, but nothing could compare to standing under the gate reading arbeit macht frei of auschwitz. It was ninth grade, and i was sitting in english class fiddling with my blackberry.
