I. Education!
A. Students haven’t always been educated like we are now!
1. Went to Australia to a cave. Found bones of a young girl that were used to
date the cave.!
2. Human beings have been around for quite awhile. Philosophy has happened
often sitting around a fire at night speculating.!
II. BRANCHES OF PHILOSOPHY!
A. Metaphysics!
1. What is the nature of reality?!
2. What is real?!
3. What exists?!
4. What is the nature of being?!
5. What does it mean “to be”?!
a) STORY: Professor’s friend Michael is dying of cancer. He is, but what
happens when he is gone? (not being anymore)
b) There will come a day where none of us will no longer be!
(1) Statistically, one of us in this class will no longer be before the end of
the semester (death). Don’t die from something stupid!
(2) Freedom is a double edged sword!
6. Reality is either permanent and unchanging OR is dynamic and evolving.!
a) Absolute…nothing is new under the sun!
b) Relative…You can’t step in the same river twice!
c) Think about Stars-They may have already died but because light travels
differently, we still see it. Is it still existing? Is it being?!
d) **Dialectical thinking…the pendulum**
(1) Thesis (Absolute reality) on one side of the swing, antithesis (Relative
Reality) on the other side. In the middle is the synthesis.!
(2) Haegel- German Philosophy!
(a) Things will only go so far in one direction, but eventually will go
back.!
(b) “What is old is new again”!
e) A priori and a posteriori!
(1) A priori apart from human existence!
(2) A posteriori only existing after and because it’s experienced.!
