Document Summary

This is one topic that i could talk about for hours. First, i personally think that social media is the origin for a lot of social judgment in today"s society; either damaging or rising our self-esteem. Using social comparisons in evaluating one"s opinions and abilities by comparing oneself to others, people decide if we are rich, smart, short or fat (festinger, 1954). For example, when we compare ourselves to others, we may feel beautiful when others seem plain, smart when others seem dull, and thoughtful when others seem cruel. Perceiving oneself favorably is known as the self-serving bias. However, it can also have the reverse affect and cause people to feel worse about themselves, for example, we may feel fat when others seem skinny, and ugly when others seem handsome. Self-serving bias, false modesty, and self-handicapping reveal our concern for the opinion of ourselves.
