Developmental theories: explanatory models of criminal behavior that follow individuals throughout their life courses of offending. Attempt to explain various stages rather than a single given moment. The emphasis is on the individual"s criminality over a period of time. How often he/she offends and the duration of their criminal career. Early onset: arrest or police contact before the age of 14 (age of offender) Frequency varies dramatically and depends on several different factors. Estimates of frequency are usually not very useful (opposite view) Low self-control is primary cause of all crime and deviance. One factor of crime: whether or not you can control yourself. Family and relationships as well as life events are important on determining misconduct: marriage, employment, military service. If poor/disadvantaged and has neurological problems = a high likelihood of a chronic, violent offender (if only has either/or, likelihood decreases) Universal health care for pregnant women and newborns for the first few years.
