Document Summary

Lab 7: taxonomy is the study of classification. Binomial nomenclature is the system of naming in which two terms (genus and species) are used to denote a species of a living organism. Taxonomy is hierarchical, going from more generalized levels (domain, kingdom) to specialized (genus, species): a species is classified by a group of naturally interbreeding populations. They share morphology, habitat, diet, reproduction, and dna. A paleospecies is extinct, so one has to look at skeletal morphology and traits to characterize it: biological classification of humans. Homo sapiens: cladistics is classification on a genealogy basis (common ancestor) without a time scale. Homo sapiens: be very familiar with the primate taxonomy provided in lab. Retention of 5 digits on hands and feet (pentadactyl) Primate hands and feet usually prehensile (adaptation for grasping) Tactile pads on digits are expanded and more sensitive. Reduction in sense of smell and nose size.
