Factors that shape individual viewpoints: many find it difficult to think accurately about drug use, media, politicians, social movement activists, and the general public often make incorrect inferences. Lifelong social experience by which humans develop their potential and learn culture. Key agents --> family, school, peers, mass media, Things we are exposed to early in life lead to increased likelihood of acceptance and engagements. Changes in attitudes toward drug use (acceptance or rejection) are influential. Very few viewpoints on drugs are based on facts, most are the social constructions. Factors that affect how one experiences a drug. Social factors: motivation, why you"re taking the drug. Contextual factors: where are you when you"re taking the drug. Attitudes --> experimentation/onset of use (attitudes + experience = continued use. Drugs: any substance that is used to modify mind and or body functioning. Psychoactive substances: drug compounds that affect the central nervous system and alter consciousness and or perceptions.
