Document Summary

Chromosomes- a discrete unit of the genome carry many genes: made up of a very long molecule of duplex dna, and about equal mass of proteins. Structural gene- a gene that codes for any rna or polypeptide product other than a regulator. Bacterial transformation- transferring genetic properties from one bacterial strain to another by extracting dna from the first strain and adding it to the second: this provided the first support that dna is the genetic material of bacteria. Transforming principle- dna that is taken up by a bacterium and whose expression then changes the properties of the recipient cell. Transfection- in eukaryotic cells, the acquisition of new genetic markers by incorporation of added dna: this can be used to introduce new genetic traits into animal cell or whole animals. Nucleoside- a purine or pyrimidine base linked to the 1" carbon of a pentose sugar: purine- 2 ringed base, pyrimidine- 1 ringed base.
