Description/definition : a neolithic society that could have given birth to the shang. Geometric designs on blackish pots that evolved from images of animals that may have had totemic significance. Simple burials, pottery with painted geometric designs (eg. grain jars with intricate spirals, diamonds, other geometric patterns) Limited range of shapes for pottery, confined to utilitarian jars/ urns. Contrast to east (liaoning to shanghai), pottery rarely painted but more elaborate forms (eg. tripods. Pedestalled bowls, cups), burials became more elaborate, more goblets -> rituals of feasting/ sacrifice. Description/definition : reference to middle and lower yellow river valley culture. Had extremely high level of skill in pottery (specifically black pottery), but potteries were typically undecorated. Description/definition : second chinese dynasty, which was mostly a farming society ruled by an aristocracy mostly concerned with war. They"re best remembered for their art of bronze casting.
