It is no secret that writing seminar is the one class every penn student despises but is. It is so despicable that some even choose to put it off until their senior spring semester. Having taken writing seminar my freshman spring, i will grudgingly admit that the techniques i learned in my writing seminar class have been useful both when writing and reading papers. Among many things, writing seminar teaches students how to break down a paper in minutes and produce the most efficient paper possible. However, its usefulness is greatly overshadowed by its deplorable structure and grading methodology. The way it is currently structured, students must devote hours dissecting essays, only to lose ten times as many points as they can gain. In addition to the risk of losing points, the harsh curve and unrealistic demand for remarkable growth by the end of the semester encourages unethical behavior.
