Document Summary

They transform one type of energy to electrical energy: transduction. The conversion of one form of energy into another: modalities. A form of energy or stimulus (light waves, pressure, etc: dorsal root ganglia is located on either side of the spinal chord, special senses are used for vision, hearing, balance, equilibrium, taste, and smell. Interpreting stimulus intensity codes: frequency of action potentials, number of receptors activated. Somatosensations- used for sensation with skin receptors and position of limbs and body. Proprioception- perception of the location of their body parts. Law of specific nerve energies- a given sensory receptor is specific for a particular energy form or stimulus type. Receptors: thermoreceptors warmth and cold, photoreceptors - light, chemoreceptors smell, taste, hormones, baroreceptors blood pressure, mechanoreceptors mechanical movement, balance, sound, pain receptors - pain, osmoreceptors - solute concentrations. Adequate stimuli- stimulus that normally activates a receptor. Phasic receptors- adapt easily, decreasing level of stimulus firing.
