Social control: the patterns of pressure through which society maintains social order and cohesion. Three means of social control: formal sanctions - police officer, law, etc, informal sanctions - other people, observing, punishments (small) that keep us in check, discipline. Discipline didn"t exist for awhile because society didn"t have a use for individual discipline. Not how we perceive it through moves. People were dropped into a hole and forgotten Subjects were fearful of the king, and were furious at him. Would talk badly about king whenever they had a chance. Would steal from king if there was no chance of getting caught: sociologists argue that in the 1800s, the idea of discipline was born, relied on hierarchy, surveillance, observation, and writing, new method (when plague strikes) One person in charge of an area or block in a village.
