In class we discussed eight characteristics of neighborhoods/communities
that contribute to making humane environments at a larger scale. Compare
and contrast the humaneness of the West Mall (Guadalupe St. to Main
Building) and the East Mall (Speedway to San Jacinto) using at least five of
those criteria. Concentrate on analysis of what environmental features
contribute to the making of a humane environment rather simply on
description of the two spaces.
Convenience
o East Mall
Houses a variety of UT buildings that hold classes, the SAC,
CLA, near Gregory Gym, near Stadium, Greg plaza.
o West Mall
Near Guadalupe, houses FAC, Union buildings, Main plaza.
o Conclusion: Depending on what you’re interested in, either could be
more convenient. Most people will find Guadalupe’s relative distance
to be significantly more beneficial, though.
Range of Activities
o East Mall
Near Stadium, some eating establishments in SAC, houses a
variety of campus buildings that hold classes, Gregory Gym.
o West Mall
FAC, shopping/dining/misc on the drag (Guadalupe), dining in
Union building, houses a variety of campus buildings that hold
classes.
o Conclusion: Similar to convenience, due to relative location of shops,
restaurants, and things off campus, most people would probably find
the West Mall to house a larger range of activities.
Range of People Accommodated
o East Mall
Generally accommodates to university students only - All
facilities that are used regularly are university owned, and
unless you have some connection with the university itself,
there’s not much of an opportunity that you’ll spend a lot of time
here. (With the exceptions of the Gregory Gym and the
Stadium)
o West Mall
Due to the presence of the bustling Guadalupe street directly
adjacent to the end of the West Mall, there’s a lot of overlap
between students and non-students alike, as the abundance of
things to do outside of the university here greatly outnumbers
that of the East Mall.
o Conclusion: Generally speaking, as with range of activities, I’d say
that the range of people accommodated is smaller on the East Mall as
opposed to the West Mall. That’s not to say the occasional bustle of
activity on the West Mall doesn’t happen from time to time, though.
Sense of Human Presence

In the east mall it almost feels as if the buildings there are complemented by the foliage nearby: freedom from intrusion/distraction, east mall, due to its general lack of activity (when compared to the west.
