Homework Assignment No. 1 (Due Thursday, February 13)
I. According to recent speculation, height and life expectancy may be related, with short people
enjoying longer lives than their taller counterparts. A source of data on which to check out the
theory are former U.S. presidents. List below are the 31 presidents who died of natural causes.
They are divided into two categories: short (<5'8") and tall (≥5'8").
Short Presidents Tall Presidents

(1) Use R to compute the central tendency of longevity (i.e., age at death) for short presidents,
tall presidents, and all presidents:
Short Presidents N=__ Mean=____ Median=____
Tall Presidents N=__ Mean=____ Median=____
All Presidents N=__ Mean=____ Median=____
On the basis of these results, what can you conclude about the speculation that short people live
longer?
(2) Redefine "short" as height<5'11" and repeat (1).
NOTE: DO NOT TURN IN ALL COMPUTER PRINTOUTS. YOU MAY ATTACH OR
COPY/PASTE RELEVANT TABLES AND GRAPHS THE COMPUTER GENERATES,
BUT YOU MUST SUMMARIZE THE RESULTS IN YOUR OWN WORDS IN A
BLUEBOOK OR SEPARATE SHEETS OF PAPER.
