Ch 1: A nation was founded on the highest ideals of individual liberty and freedom was built on
slaughter and destruction of epic proportions.” Although the origins of the American history reflected
violence and mistreatment, the country has redeemed itself through its democratic government. The
massacre at Mystic was a pivotal day for U.S history because, it reflected the relationship between the
Europeans and Indians and the shift of powers that occurred overnight.
Due to the harsh relationships between the Indians and Europeans, the idea of mistreatment and
injustice came to play. This type of thinking was settled within these Europeans as they moved west
across the continent as well. The idea of manifest destiny was used to justify their claim on the native’s
land and their destruction as they expanded west. The Europeans thought of themselves as god favored
people and that “violence pleased the English god.” Therefore, to them they were civilized who needed
to tame the wilderness and the “savages.” This particular thought is what contributed to the Europeans
expansion and weak relationship with the natives for centuries to come.
When the colonists won the massacre at Mystic, the power from natives to Settlers shifted almost
overnight. This massacre clearly defined that there was no hope for colonists and Indians to coexist. The
brutal actions of the puritans were not just a signal for the Pequot but for all the tribes that existed. It was
a signal for their power and dominance. For the first time the puritans felt that they could control the land
and its people to their favor. This confidence is what motivated them to expand and dominate for the
future.
In conclusion, May 26, 1637 was a significant day because it turned tables of who was going to have
power over America. Even though this day reflected the starting of the puritan’s dominance, it also
reflected the injustice done to the Natives. However, the country redeemed itself through recognizing the
Pequot and returning their lost land. The most significant result of this massacre was the transfer of
power, which dominated and determined the future of this country.

Ch 2:
Shay’s Rebellion was a foundation to what built the democratic government we live in today. Without
this change in government it was possible that the colonies would have had another revolution, but
amongst themselves. Even though Shay and his men lost the rebellion, he managed to develop a new
government by exposing the weakness of the articles of confederation and influencing the conservative
structure of the federal government.
The Shay’s Rebellion highlighted the weakness of the articles of confederation thus, put pressure on the
new government to make alterations. With this rebellion came encouragement to resist debt collections
and taxes all across the colonies. It also motivated nationalists to keep pushing for a new constitutional
convention. Without exposing the weakness of the articles, a new constitutional convention wouldn’t
have occurred thus a fragile government. The colonies wouldn’t have been able to improve and advance
as a nation with an unstable government unable to receive support from its people.
With Shay’s Rebellion in mind, leaders proposed a new form of government that provided voice for the
people and balance between powers. “Fear of democracy defined the discussion over the new
constitution.” Shay’s actions provoked fear for the future because individual rights and liberty weren’t
given importance compared to the stress and tension enforced on the citizens. Therefore, a new plan was
established which, provided a system of checks and balances still practiced today. If not for the Shay’s
Rebellion the articles of confederation might have still be in use resulting another revolutionary war.
In conclusion, January 25 1787 was a pivotal day to U.S history because it reshaped the government
into a more strong and stable power. Had the Articles of Confederation remained, the newly independent
nation might’ve had another revolutionary war or lost dominance over its land. Shay’s Rebellion helped
define and enforce a proper democratic government in U.S history.
