Document Summary

Classify matter according to its state (solid, liquid, gas) and whether it is a mixture, substance, compound, and/or element. Matter- anything that has both mass and volume. Can be classified 3 ways: physical state (solid/liquid/gas), substance/mixture, elements/compounds. Compound- more than one atom homogenous and heterogeneous. Homogeneous- mixed substances i. e. ) salt& water, sugar & water. Mixture: a. a: differentiate between mass and weight; physical and chemical changes. Heterogeneous- separate and unevenly distributed form i. e. ) oil & water, orange juice w/ pulp. Changes in chemical identity or make up of matter. Irreversible: know how to convert answers to significant figures (add, subtract, multiply, divide) Zeros between 2 other significant digits are significant. Zeros before the first non-zero are not significant i. e. ) Zeros at the end of a number are significant if they are to the right i. e. ) Result should have no more sig figs than the factor with fewest sig.
