In our attempt to understand a phenomena, we try to predict it. Welsh 2: errors in inquiry and some solutions. In research, we try to look at objectivity, but we understand that everybody has agency. The foundations of social science: the foundations of social science are logic and observation, we must be able to observe it, but it also needs to be logical so that we can se the relationship between variables occurring. Social science = theory + data collection + data analysis: theory, not philosophy or belief, social theory has to do with what is, not with what should be. Welsh 3: theory a systematic explanation (so valid and reliable) for the observations (so we observe/ know that it is happening) that relate to a particular aspect of life. Some dialects of social research: qualitative and quantitative data, qualitative data- non-numerical data, quantitative data- numerical date.
