Sir henry clinton with campbell sent to savannah: fell pretty quick. Brit troops then come from florida and essentially take control of georgia. Jan, 1780: clinton and cornwallis arrive in savannah, plan to take charleston, siege on may 1780 fell in may 12 5,500 troops surrendered. Clinton went back to nyc, thought they"d won the south: congress sends general gates down to take over about 1,500 troops in sc, cornwallis busy building posts around sc to pacify it, august 16, 1780. Catastrophe for colonists; militia absolutely worthless, they flee. Cornwallis moved into nc: captured charlotte: divided force and attempted to pacify them. Beyond the south in 1779-1780: morristown, arnold, and rochambeau. Washington got a huge shock went out to inspect west point fort: learned arnold tried to sell blueprint for the fort to the brits.
