Stats is all about data: collecting, describing (summarizing, visualizing), analyzing data. Data: set of measurements taken on a set of individual units, usually stored/presented in a dataset, comprised of variables measured on cases. Cases and variables: we obtain info about cases (cid:894)(cid:862)who(cid:863)(cid:895) or units, a variable is any characteristic that is recorded for each case, generally, each case makes a row, each column is a different variable. Variables: eat a yogurt a day (explanatory) (categorical, how much they weigh (response) (quantitative) Variables: loudness of music (quantitative) (explanatory, how many beers they drank (quantitative) (response) Dataset usually comprised of variables measured on cases. Statistical inference: the process of using data from a sample to get info about the population (cid:862)dewey defeats tru(cid:373)a(cid:374)(cid:863, telephone poll, truman won, sampling bias. Sampling bias: occurs when the method of selecting a sample causes the sample to differ from the population in some relevant way.
