Objectives: how 21st century environment influences health and behavior. Now cities have rings of suburbs and exurbs. Newest trend is revitalization of inner city neighborhoods. High density construction in downtown and near downtown neighborhoods. Expressways allow suburbs to develop way out into the country: the exurbs. Large commercial areas: cities have rapidly extended into rural, acres of parking lots, high income subdivisions areas. Larger houses and larger lots: so-called american dream. Freeways made it possible: affordable cars, cheap gasoline. New trend - gentrification: more people are moving back into cities, renovating older home, new infill construction, e. g. , germantown in nashville, 12 south, good revitalization and economic development, bad original low income residents are displaced. Health impact of urban sprawl: direct effects of reliance on the cars. Pedestrian and bicycle fatalities: reduction in physical activity, water quality and quantity, urban heat sink and global warming, mental health impacts, concentrated poverty. Air pollution is associated with: asthma, cancer, heart disease.
