What are 5 interesting facts or take-aways that you gleaned from this article?
1. I really enjoyed this article about Anthropologie. Their philosophy deal with
spending their money on the store experience that will exceed the customer’s
expectations. The idea is to invest in executions. This is in direct opposition to a
company’s approach to “push” products onto people.
2. The reason the company is so successful is that the company focusses on
specializing in the customer. They focus on who their customer is and cater the
products/ services to that individual. I also appreciated that the address the
nuances and complexities of the customer base because intersectionality is so
prevalent in a diverse community.
3. Story-telling is central and texture is important to informing the brand. The
brand’s identity should aim to create a space that the customer can identify with
but also be transformed.
4. Something that resonated with me well was the idea of considering visual and
other sensory elements for a layer or artistry and more stunning experience.
Everything has a story and focusing on creating a mood and context are
necessary steps to take when establishing the brand.
5. Anthropologie sells on-of-a-kind objects that comprise 35% of the company’s
sales. Beyond quality, the brand/ product needs personality and the collections
are organized into concepts that consider aesthetic and branding.

Article Assignment
Your Name: Jazmine Lawrence
Article Name: HBR article: “The Discipline of Innovation"
Author: Peter F. Drucker
Date Due: 30 January 2019
What are 5 interesting facts or take-aways that you gleaned from this article?
1. Something in the very beginning that stuck out to me was the idea that
organizations, with a goal to foster change and improve live, need to learn what
is needed to perform and innovate. This is important because it speaks to the
necessity of identifying a problem and providing a solution.
2. The is idea that you need to be willing to abandon things that don’t give you
results really struck me. I completely understand the reasoning because if it is
not profitable than you are essentially wasting time, and I believe that we are to
be good stewards over the limited time we have. It struck me because I couldn’t
help but think about people who put all of their heart and soul into something and
they have to be willing to abandon it, which is a lot easier said than done.
3. In the text, Drucker wrote, “One of the tasks of leaders is to put scarce resources
of people and money where they do the most good,” which I believe speaks a lot
to delegation and being the best steward over what you have. Making sure to
focus on results and opportunities is imperative to doing the most meaningful
work for others as well as yourself.
4. The breakdown of mastering the discipline of innovation: focusing on the mission,
defining the results that you are after, and assessing what you are doing as well
as how you are doing it. This is important because it provides a structured
outline/ guide as to how to approach integrating innovation in your venture.
5. Drucker’s tone in the article struck me negatively when he was recounting his
story. I didn’t like the idea that “reaching 10th graders in the organization was a
failed idea because it was too late to teach them how to learn”. The organization
basically gave up on them rather than redesigning its approach because 10th
graders still have so much to learn and live for.
