Document Summary

Living organisms are the most complex chemical systems on earth. Complexity ultimately depends on energy derived from the sun. All living systems are made up of cells (there are many different types and complexities of cells) Living organisms have the ability to store and process information (genetic information represented by an organisms geno, in chromosomes, that carry out important activities) Living systems transfer energy (photosynthesis, one chemical form to another) Living systems grow and reproduce (all organisms can increase in size, reproduce, and pass on genetics to offspring) Living systems adapt and evolve (an individual cannot evolve, but natural selection allows for organisms to change over time to adapt to their surroundings better than their ancestors, evolution and scientific theories are important in this category) Living systems are very diverse in form and function. Classification improves communication between scientists and facilitates the study of life. Classification is done with both phenotype and genotype.
