Document Summary

Study of how alleles are passed from one generation to the other. Gene is a segment of dna that codes for something- speci c proteins: each gene has multiple alleles (versions)- each parent will give their child a di erent alleged of each gene. Genetics is based on the principle that we inherit a full set of chromosomes from each parent, but the chromosomes have di erent alleles of the same gene. Diploid- have 2 full sets of chromosomes: 46 chromosomes per somatic cell, 23 come from mother, 23 from father (paired up) Only cells in human body not diploid are egg and sperm: 23 chromosomes (haploid, when two fuse during fertilization the result will be a new diploid individual. Crossing over can occur (maternal and paternal dna mixes in chromosomes before split to create egg/sperm cells) Gregor mendel- monk worked with pea plants to understand the passing of alleles from generation to next generation.
