A POLYIODIDE SALT: SYNTHESIS AND ANALYSIS
Aim:
- To synthesise a polyiodide salt
- To determine the chemical formula of the polyiodide using analytical methods.
Method: Refer to First Year Chemistry Laboratory Manual page 57-59
Results:
Mass of tetramethylammonium used: 0.25 g
Mass of iodine used: 10 mL
Yield of Polyiodide: 0.10 g
Object Mass
1 Mass of Beaker and sample 47.19 g
2 Mass of beaker after sample
has been transferred
46.99 g
3 Mass of polyiodide added to
volumetric flask
0.195 g
Concentration of sodium thiosulphate solution: 0.0201
Volume delivered in one aliquot of polyiodide: 5mL
Titre Initial reading Final reading Volume added
1 26.5 mL 32.9 mL 6.4 mL
2 32.7 mL 37.5 mL 4.6 mL
3 37.5 mL 42.2 mL 4.7 mL
4 42.2 mL 46.9 mL 4.7 mL
Titres used: 2,3,4
Average volume of sodium thiosulphate required to reach endpoint: 4.67 mL ± 0.05
Number of moles of thiosulphate to reach endpoint: 9.4 x 10-5 mol
Moles of iodine in one 5 mL aliquot: 4.7x10-5 mol
Moles of iodine in original 50 mL sample: 4.7x10-4 mol
Mass of iodine present in original sample: 0.12 g
Percentage of iodine by mass in sample: 61.04%
Value of x: 1.24 (rounded to 1)
Formula: Nme4·I3
Discussion:
Errors in results can be attributed to methodical errors in experimental procedure, particularly in
transfer of iodine sample. Much mass was lost when transferring from the bag which ultimately
