Week 9 reading: anxiety, obsessive-compulsive and trauma-related disorders. Anxiety= plan for future threats: anxiety, fear system seems to misfire. Experience fear when no danger in environment e. g. panic attacks. A little anxiety=adaptive, a lot of anxiety= detrimental: most common type of psychological disorder, costly to society e. g. medical costs like higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Costly to themselves to e. g. high risk of suicide, unemployment and days off work: all decrease quality of life. Clinical descriptions of the anxiety disorders: lots of overlap between how anxiety disorders are defined, all must have the following. Interfere w/functioning or cause marked distress: not caused by a drug/medical condition, symptoms= 6 months or 1 month for panic disorder, fears and anxieties= distinct from symptoms of another anxiety disorder. Generally starts in childhood: natural environment: e. g. storms/heights/water, beings in childhood, blood/injection/injury , runs in families, heart rate slows, possible fainting, situational e. g. transport, tunnels, bridges, flying, closed spaced.
