The main difference between classical realism and modern realism is the differences in human nature & structure. Machiavelli, hobbes and thucydides" hold the belief that solely due to human. Structural realists believe that states seek power in hegemony because of a constant need to balance power in an anarchic and uncertain world. Offensive realism, or classical realism focuses on states seeking power in an anarchic and uncertain world. This occurs through increasing state offensive capabilities such as military force. Neorealism focuses on states seeking security rather than power. It is through this belief that stated develop defensive capabilities as in an anarchic and uncertain world, they can only look to themselves for protection. The difference is the reasons for which the states are developing their capacities. According to realists, conflict between states is a legitimate use of statesmanship to protect citizens and demonstrate power. Therefore, conflict within an anarchic and uncertain world is inevitable.
