Document Summary

Chapter 21: an introduction to evolution: a species can be defined as a related group of organisms that share a distinct characteristic. It is evolution on a small scale: macroevolution is evolution on a larger scale. It results in the formation of new species, or groups of related species. He used species as the basic unit of his classification system: initially, ray believed that organisms do not evolve. However, linnaeus eventually accepted that hybridization could produce a new species of a plant/animal: baron georges cuvier argued against evolution. However, he rejected the idea that one species could evolve into another: shortly after this, jean-baptiste lamarck examined fossils and had discovered that over time, some organisms had stayed the same, while others had changed. Using this discovery, lamarck hypothesized that organisms" change (into more complex organisms) over many generations by adapting to their environments: lamarck also thought that these behavioural changes could affect one"s traits.
