Scientists can now differentiate between insignificant asymmetry and autistic symptoms due to extraordinary advances in neuroimaging technology and research. Structural mri provides views of the anatomical structures inside the brain (since 1970"s) Structural mri helps answer question 1 (what does it look like?) Functional mri shows the brains function in response to sensory stimuli (5 senses), or when a person is performing a task (since 1991) Functional mri helps answer question 1 (what does it do?) Neuroimaging cant distinguish between cause and effect. The primal emotional areas tell us when to fight and when to flee. Analogy of an office building: some departments work closer together than others. Some departments are more active than others, depending on what the task at hand is. But at the end of the day, they come together to produce a single product: a thought, an action, a response.
