ENGL 2P80 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Friar Laurence
Document Summary
Friar laurence is very interested in ending the feud between the capulets and the. Montagues and this motivation is a key factor in the thematic and dramatic progressions of the play. Instead of love being a good thing that brings them together, it leads them to their death. Friar laurence is the only person that romeo and juliet can confide in and so many of their plans and their eventual fate lead back to him because he is the one that helped them. As discussed in lecture, friar laurence had the power to turn this play into a comedy instead of a tragedy for up until act 5 both endings were a possibility. He wanted a happy ending to happen since he went out of his way to help the couple and used faking juliet"s death as the means to make that happy ending happen.
