At a masquerade ball, everyone is in a mask. You"re trying to guess the identity behind the mask. She argues there isn"t a feminine identity behind the mask, the mask is the identity. The mask is essential in the sense that it is per formative and is constituted in all the codes that make up women. Codes that constitute the masquerade of femininity- Innocence and helplessness for example crying when you get pulled over by the police. Flirting to get your way performing your sexuality as a way of getting what you want. She argues that there is nothing beyond the mask, that the mask is woman. Implications she doesn"t have her own identity. Lacan theorizes the relationship between appearances and being in gender terms.
