The evolution of the social organization of health. Early 20th century, hospitals seen as centres for advanced treatment and cures. 1929, 950 hospitals in canada (half public, quarter private) Hospital governance and administration in 2011 there was 1172 hospitals in canada from 1997 to 2003, 3. 1 to 3. 3 million ppl were admitted to hospitals annually. Dual authority: the twin lines of authority in a hospital: a medical line of authority and an administrative line of author, the latter of which involve the supervision and control of salaried hospital staff such as nurses. Physicians operate independently from hospitals and nurses dependently. Depersonalization: striving to create a group from a collection of individuals, the institutions works on making individuals similar to each other by wearing the same clothes, haircuts and behaviours: transform individuals to patients. At the same time, not all patients get the same care (cultural biases and beliefs) Hospitals consume the most of the health care budget.
