LING 2P50 Chapter Notes - Chapter 13: Vocal Tract, Lateral Clicks, Air Mass
Document Summary
Air stream mechanism: sets the air in motion. Initiator: anatomical organ whose action sets the air stream in motion. Boyle"s law: the pressure of a gas varies inversely with its volume; 2nd principle says that if possible gas will move so as to equalize different pressures. 3 occur in language: pulmonic (initiator: lings), glottalic (glottis), velaric (velum) The primary air stream mechanism for speech; all sounds of english are pulmonic. External intercostals lift the rib cage and hold it up inflating the lungs. Internal intercostals pull the rig cage down and deflate the lungs (egressive) We use ingressive muscles to inflate the lungs. We bring egressive muscles into play to push air out and overcome the increasing elastic force which resists compression. Glottis moves up and down like a piston. Glottic air stream can"t be continued for long but it can create high pressures.
