Document Summary
For each rule ask them to list out environments, figure out which is predictable and which is not to determine underlying form. After determining the palatalization #1 rule, ask them if they can determine any. exceptions and after they give examples of exceptions probe them to figure out what this means in terms of rule order (i. e that palatalization must occur before vowel alternations) Examples of exceptions include the word for ache, ditch, table and bridge. After the determine the 0 e alternation, label the suffixes with the o as underlying. What does this mean for rule order? it means that the underlying form of the noun is palatalized so the: --> e rule was enacted but then after the vowel alternation, palatalization rule #2 was enacted upon. Example of words where this happens includes the word for stone, son in law, copper, swan.
