Spread of english provides for high levels of interconnectedness among naion states and local economies and cultures. English represents an image in popular imaginaion, established through the media rather than a pracical necessity or reality for many people. Some scholars believe this global spread is natural, inevitable, neutral and beneicial while others see it as threatening local cultures, languages, and ideniies. Countries with poor english skills also have lower levels of trade, innovaion, and income. English is a convenient language for communicaion across boundaries and in a wide range of professions.
