Behavior should only be studied in terms of physical processes without reference to the mind. Learning was said to involve habit formaion through repeiion and reinforcement. Behaviorism is relected in the contrasive hypothesis which states that where the irst language and the target lang are similar, learners will generally aquire structures with ease and where they are diferent, learners will have diiculty. Ca is based on the related theory of language transfer: diiculty in second lang learning results from transfer of features of the irst lang to second lang. Chomsky was inluenial in rejecing behaviorism and presening a theory that lang acquisiion has to do with the mind. The goal of research from this perspecive is to understand how changes in linguisic knowledge occur, what kinds of mental reperesentaions are constructed and the nature of the informaion processing systems that learners make use of.
