Document Summary

Canada was founded as a white settler-colony primarily for british and french immigrants. Constructed with successive waves of immigrant labour. Until (cid:853)(cid:861)(cid:858)(cid:852)s, canada had de facto (cid:498)whites only(cid:499) immigration policy. Non-(cid:494)white(cid:495) immigrants denied full citizenship and access to rights. They were an xploitable, vulnerable source of labour. Chinese, irish, eastern-southern europeans, indians, afro-caribbean: eg. 1885 chinese immigration act built railroads but ineligible for citizenship. When explorers first (cid:498)discovered(cid:499) africa there was a lot of gossip about (cid:498)crazy beings(cid:499) and (cid:498)wild beasts(cid:499) Many people saw black people as as less capable, less trustworthy and more likely to harm. Local teacher and activist says nova scotia law considered black people (cid:498)a source of cheap labour in the (cid:853)(cid:859)(cid:852)(cid:852)s and (cid:853)(cid:860)(cid:852)(cid:852)s(cid:499) When these underpaid workers tried to compete with whites for the same jobs race riots occurred. Nova scotia has a history of promising much to black workers but not fulfilling their promises.
