Words recognition is a bottom up or data driven process. Recognizing a word means you"ve decided the word is familiar. Identifying a word means that you"ve made a commitment and can form a response to the word. Understanding a word means you know the word means. Lexical access means obtaining all knowledge about a word (meaning, sound, Naming a word means accessing the sound of a word appearance, syntactic information) Magic moment in word processing is when a word is activated enough in our minds to produce a response but we haven"t started to access the meaning. Age of acquisition variable means we are quicker to identify words we learned earlier in life. Semantic priming means we not easily identify words if it is preceded by a word related in meaning. Segmentation problems means spoken words are slurred together and hard to separate. Phonemes are smallest unit of language that affects meaning.
