KINE 3P05 Chapter Notes - Chapter 24: Anagenesis, Cladogenesis, Polyphyly
Document Summary
Chapter 24 learning outcomes: state the three domains of life. Similarities among various species that occur because the species are derived from a common ancestor: understand what a phylogeny represents. The evolutionary history of a species or group of species: describe the difference between shared primitive and shared derived characters. Shared primitive characters/shared ancestral characters: a trait shared with a distant ancestor older traits ones that occurred earlier in the evolution. Shared derived characters: a trait that is shared by a group of organisms but not by a distant common ancestor more recent traits on an evolutionary timescale: differentiate among monophyletic, paraphyletic, and polyphyletic groups. Monophyletic: contains a common ancestor and all the species that are derived from that ancestor. The ideal goal of taxonomy is to place organisms into monophyletic groups. Paraphyletic: contains a common ancestor and some, but not all, of its descendants.
