Functionalism view work as an integral part of the social structure, and look to the pattern of relationship that link people to their working lives. Tied to durkheim"s notion of organic solidarity (based on interdependence and the division of labour) . Conflict theory suggests that human beings achieve their potential through their labour, therefore the human world is created through social processes of labour. Labour forms the basis of marx"s concept of materialism . because the proletariat class does not own the means of production, its members are forced to sell their labour. Resulting exploitation results in workers" alienation from the fruits of the labour similar to durkheim"s anomie. People feel controlled by the social institutions and lacking the agency to influence of or change them. Symbolic interactionism views our sense of self as resulting from human interaction, from our interpretation of symbols, and from our engagement with the world around us. Responses to people can influence how people view themselves.
