Functionalist theory views the health care system as contributing to a stable society. With regard to aging, functionalists stress the disengagement of seniors from positions of power to allow younger people to assume these roles. With regard to disabilities, functionalists hold that the sick role defined the expected behaviour of those who are sick. Conflict theory highlight the economic inequality in canada"s two-tier health care system, and how increasing medicalization has served the interests of the rich and powerful. Conflict theorists point to economic competition between the old and the young. Focus on the types of inequality experienced by people with disabilities. Symbolic interactionism look at how labelling & the self-fulfilling prophecy affect the conception of one"s own health; stress the importance of senior"s continuing engagement and activity. Stress the importance of self-management for those with disabilities, as well as the negative consequences of labelling.
