Document Summary

Cytosol: jelly like substance which subcellular components are suspended. Chromosomes:carry genes in the form of dna, carry genetic information. Most of the dna is in in the nucleus which is bounded by the double membrane. Within the cytoplasm there are organells suspended in cytosol. Dna concentrated in a region which is not membrane closed called nucleoid. Functions: synthesis of proteins, transport of proteins into membranes and organells or out of cell, metabolism and movement of lipids, detoxification of poisons. Endoplasmic reticulum: extensively network of membranes, consists a network of membranuous tubules and sacs called cisternae, er membrane separates the er lumen or cisternal space from the cytosol, smooth er,lacks ribosomes, rough er,lots of ribosomes. Functions of smooth er: synthesis of lipids(oils, phospholipids, steroids)(testes and ovaries) Steroids such as sex hormones of vertebrates: metabolism of carbohydrates, detoxification of drugs and poisons(liver cells) Making it more soluble and easier to flush out.
