Org culture is the personality of the firm and it is becoming more common for companies to use selection practices to hire ppl that will fit the culture. When groups of people share the same behavioral norms, there is less need for external controls and close supervision: can be either ethical or unethical depending on values, norms, traditions, they have developed. 3 levels: artifacts that are visible/tangible: org stories, buildings, rituals, ceremonies etc, espoused values: strategies, goals and company mission, assumptions: unconscious taken for granted beliefs, perceptions etc. The toyota way describes the espoused values that comprise toyota"s culture: Genchi genbutsu (rough translation: go to the source): as in look at hard facts over opinions. Challenge: problems are welcomed challenges that need to be overcome. Teamwork: share knowledge and put the firm"s interests over ind interest. Respect for each other: express opinions in ways that are respectable to others and their knowledge/skills.
